This necklace includes a genuine Spanish silver two real coin recovered from the El Cazador shipwreck of 1784. The chain and bezel are crafted of sterling silver and plated in 18-karat gold.
This rare necklace was released in limited edition by the Franklin Mint in the 1990's after they were granted exclusive distribution rights for the 18th century coins by the fishing boat captain who had found the historic treasure. This item is in excellent condition. It's new in the box and has never been worn.
El Cazador is called the shipwreck that changed the world due to it's key role in the events leading up to a young United States having the opportunity to double it's size through the Louisiana purchase. Instead of securing Spain's hold on the North American territory, these coins found themselves at the bottom of the sea. Spain had to sell the Louisiana territory to France after these silver coins failed to arrive in New Orleans to shore up the provinces finances. Napoleon, who was focused on Europe, then re-sold the Louisiana territory to the United States.
The Spanish two real silver coin is considered America's first quarter as it was the first quarter dollar legal tender in the United States. The phrase 'piece of eight' referred to this type of coin. For historical context, the famed pirate Jean Lafitte was born in 1780, four years before the shipwreck from which this coin was recovered.
