This spectacular vintage hand carved wooden art panel from Honduras appears to depict the Mayan Maize Corn God, or his hero twin sons. The Mayan Maize God, Huh Hunahpu, is a key figure in Mayan mythology and is associated with death-and-rebirth and that life comes from the earth, which must be honored and respected. He is commonly associated with good harvests in some areas.
This panel would make an excellent wall display. It's also the size of a modern lap desk for a laptop. The panel is carved from a single solid piece of wood. The date of creation is unknown, possibly 1970's or earlier, generally classified as folk art. The wood is gently worn with some visible age marks. It also includes a custom glass insert to cover the inner faces of the tray.
