This spectacular vintage blowpipe specimen was purchased from the Peruvian Amazon in the 1990's. It's age is unknown. It has plant fiber containers for the darts and cotton, and a genuine piranha fish jaw. It's a traditional design made of local wood, wrapped in huambe plant fiber, and sealed on each end with boiled black amazonian rubber tree sap. The plant fiber wrapping has become brittle with age.
The cotton was there to tuck around the dart to make the shaft airtight for firing. The piranha teeth were used to sharpen the darts, which would often be dipped in poison for hunting. The local black tar ensured an airtight seal at the end joints.
This blowpipe was halved for transport outside of the rain forest, now spanning an inch shy of 3 feet in length. Blowpipes from indigenous South American tribes often start around 6 feet in length, but rarely make it out of the jungle at that size as they aren't practical to transport without shortening.
