The Royal Geographical Society commissioned for this spectacular world globe to be created in 1983. It includes iconic cold war era geography featuring the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics territory and a unified Yugoslavia. A fantastic piece of history, frozen in time.
1983 was a key year of the Reagan Doctrine and Thatcherism, during which the Able Archer 83 exercise took place. It was a realistic simulation of a coordinated NATO nuclear release, which was perhaps the most dangerous moment since the Cuban Missile Crisis, as the Soviet leadership feared that a nuclear attack might be imminent.
The globe is in great vintage condition with some minor rust spots showing through on the ornate engravings around the base and on the equator ring. Also, there are two inner areas of the wooden ring surrounding the globe that have small dents. Overall it's a fantastic piece.
Dimensions: Height about 20 inches, Diameter of the outer band is 17 inches, Diameter of the globe itself is about 12 inches.
